James approached me looking for a site, initially only wanting a portfolio site to display his photographs but with the intention of eventually selling prints through it.
Visually this was accomlished using a simple black and white layout with green highlights.
After introducing him to Concrete5 and building the home page and galleries section of his site he was so happy with the ease of use and flexible modular construction, that his confidence in his ability to maintain the site himself, meant that he decided to proceed with the e-commerce side.
One of his major concerns was that he wanted the site to look more like a gallery/portfolio than an e-commerce site and that he did not want shopping cart links, prices and buy now buttons distracting from the photography.
We decided to make use of the Billboards Add-On to allow the visitor to have control over the slideshow in the galleries with the abilty to go back to earlier photographs without waiting for the slideshow to cycle through.
Another great thing about the Billboard Add-On is that each photograph can be given an individual link. In this case we linked the photo's into the the Product Page for related Print generated by the eCommerce Add-On.
This takes someone who is interested in the photo through to a new page with a description of the photograph, an option to purchase two different sizes and an oversized lightbox display which shows the photographs in full high resolution glory.
Finally it was decided that it was all very well having the prints product pages and shopping cart links hidden away behind the photo's in the galleries, but that it would be easy for a customer to misplace their shopping trolley or even worse to never even realise that there was an option to buy prints. To solve this we added a new page to the menu called Prints which displays all the products in a list and also gives an easy check-out link.
After setting up some default page types for him, and running him through the product creation procedure over the telephone, James is now happily running his website- the only downside possibly being his last email comment to me "you do realise you have made yourself obsolete by telling me how to use concrete"!
