The British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust (BSLBT) commissions programmes made in British Sign Language by Deaf people for Deaf people. All of these programmes are available to watch on television, and now online via the BSL Zone website.

BSLBT was set up in 2008, with Ofcom's approval,  to offer an alternative way for commercial broadcasters to meet their regulatory requirements to provide sign language on their qualifying channels. BSLBT gained charitable status in January 2012.

The basic brief for this site was:

  • To produce an 'iPlayer' style experience to showcase all of the programmes produced by BSLBT.
  • Provide up to the minute information about the outreach work that BSLBT carry out in the Deaf community, as well as industry and general Deaf news
  • Accurately represent the organistaion
  • Provide as much content as possible in British Sign Language as the primary language
  • To have a responsive design and be optimised accordingly
  • Be highly accessible and device agnostic - especially for the large amount of video content
  • Include swipe gestures for touch screen devices on carousels and sliders
