Adding layouts to sitewide/global areas

I noticed I can't do this specifically in sitewide elements. Is this by design? Is this something that is going to be addressed in later versions? Or, am I overlooking something? I know it's probably possible if I venture under the hood but I'm trying to minimize that sort of stuff at the moment. Any insight would be much appreciated.

You should be able to add layouts to sitewide (global) areas in 5.7.x.
If it is not working for you, then there may be something wrong with the theme you're using, or perhaps there could be a javascript conflict. Or whatever theme you're using simply doesn't allow the addition of layouts.

Can you specify what version you're using, and what theme?

I'm using 5.7.2 and the default theme (Elemental). When I click inside of sitewide areas, I don't see an option to "Add Layout." All I see is "Edit Area Design."

Actually they were disabled as of 5.7.1.

"Layouts are no longer available to add in global areas. These will return at a later point."

I've just done a fresh install of 5.7.2 on my Win8 PC WAMP and I don't see the add layout at all on sitewide areas or otherwise. Did an install with content, using elemental and have made no changes at all - is completely vanilla.

They are currently not enabled on global areas. It's actually a larger challenge than we thought so we wanted to wait to get it right.

Looks like this may not have made it in to 5.7.4 but is still under discussion for future releases:

Why not still allow the page template editing where we could preset the actual page templates with the blocks, stacks and layouts we want?
