File manager types?

Using the file manger I see that you can upload different file types and if I upload a mp3 file I see a new type appears: audio.
If I add tif to the accepted extensions when I try and upload the file it will error saying it cannot generate a thumbnail for the file.
So how would I go about adding a custom type for such files?
Edit: On further testing zips upload file, it's just tif files that fail.

This is just a guess, but try using .tiff instead of .tif.
TIFF is much more common than TIF.
