Re apply Content and Data

I'm having major problems with a site.
Every time i try to upgrade i lose the whole site and have to ask my host to restore to a previous date. Done this three times now.
I have tried manual upgrade but that also breaks the site.
I would like to install a clean C5 in a new directory, and them apply the old content and data.
Please can anyone tell me if this is possible or even if there is an app or scripts that can help?

It's possible too that you're trying to upgrade too far and need to take smaller jumps to upgrade without errors
