We already sorted this issue out, but I'm going to cross-post this answer here in case anyone else comes across this thread in the future:

If you go to Dashboard > File Manager and click the Access tab at the top, you'll see a box named Allowed File Types.

This is supposed to contain a list of all the types of files you're allowed to upload, but for some reason, it may be blank. Even though the admin is technically allowed to upload files, no file types are allowed...so the file upload buttons disappear.

To fix this, paste the following into the Allowed File Types field and click Save:

flv, jpg, gif, jpeg, ico, docx, xla, png, psd, swf, doc, txt, xls, xlsx, csv, pdf, tiff, rtf, m4a, mov, wmv, mpeg, mpg, wav, avi, m4v, mp4, mp3, qt, ppt, pptx, kml, xml

We ultimately determined that these settings were "lost" due to some faulty code in a third-party developer's Marketplace add-ons-- HTML5 Video and HTML5 Music. The initial release of these add-ons attempted to add a file extension to the list, but unintentionally cleared the allowed file types out, all together.

This is not caused by upgrading your concrete5 site or using a one-click installer / updater.

Hope this helps everyone!

Thanks for solution. This issue bugged me for 2 days. I had this problem on Concrete 5.5.0. It did not use a SimpleScript to install. Also, I am on HostMonster. I had same problem on doing a fresh install on Windows using WAMP. All of them were fresh install. I believe it is a bug in Concrete5 5.5.0 instaallation script. After doing a lot of Googling, I came across your fix. It solved my problem. It drove me nut for a couple of days. I tried Chmod -R 777 on "files" as suggested in Installation documents (even though it is a big security loophole in Concrete5. Noothing helped, but your solution. Thanks a lot again.

Since you mentioned it did not happen with Manual installation. Also, all of the installation were manual installations. It seems to me a bug in Concrete5 installation, either it is a fresh install, upgrade or manual install.

We're still looking into this issue. So far it's been a difficult one to track down, and might be related to specific hosting environments. I've performed dozens of 5.5.0 and 5.5.1 installs so far and haven't run into it yet. Regardless, the core team is aware of this.

Hi all,

I had the same problem today and thanks for the Solution provided by Matt it's been solved. Since I'm new in Concrete5, I've started to exploring around and obviously visited the "Allowed File Types" tab without saving it. It was empty to begin with, but there wasn't any problem after the installation.
Anyway, thanks again ;)
Cheers,
A.

Hi arashst,

Glad to hear you found my post helpful.

In the time since I originally replied to this thread, we discovered that the problem was caused by a couple of free add-ons in our Marketplace, HTML5 Music and HTML5 Video:

http://www.concrete5.org/marketplace/addons/html5-music/...
http://www.concrete5.org/marketplace/addons/html5-video/...

These add-ons unintentionally wiped out a site's allowed file types during installation. The developer of these add-ons has been made aware of the problem and released new versions to address the bug. Sites that have installed an older version of these add-ons will be affected until you perform the fix described above-- manually adding the file types back into the Allowed File Types field. Upgrading the HTML5 Music or HTML5 Video add-ons to the latest version should not affect your site, so feel free to do so.
