Combining AJAX Page Tools and Discussion Forum

Hi I am a newbie here. Has anyone tried to combine the AJAX Page Tools and Discussion Forum to create a similar functioning forum to this one, with the search, sort and filter functions. It should not be hard. Was there any success? I am not interested in a how to do, just in the possibility before I spend my time and money with the two products.
