Faster way to back up the site directory

Backing up my site directory so I can upgrade C5. It is taking forever so I'm wondering if there is an easy way to back up only the most critical elements. Is the important stuff all in one place?

Don't know how you are going about it but, you most certainly do not need to backup the cache directory. You can tar it on the server and exclude the cache directory then download it, should be pretty quick.
