I want to do this: (But I don't even know what a css is. I am NOT a computer lady-) I want to know the simplest way about this. I am making a portfolio type site, I am not at all up to date on web design--- I have 1 subpage now, I will have 2-3 more. On each subpage I need to put several pictures (Or subpages?) & also, I want to make a list of every picture (or subpage) on the larger subpage.? Someday I want to put thumbnails in place of the list.
For now,
What should I do? I can't figure it out.
Your sub pages can support your portfolio pages, they'll allow you to add images and text. But you might decide you need a custom page type to best display the information you want on each portfolio page. Though not essential it will also make building a list of your portfolio pages easier as you can use the pagelist block and filter on page type
Even if you don't have a custom page type, the pagelist block will allow you to display a list of your portfolio (sub) pages, using the "beneath this page" or "beneath another page" options
Create the sub-pages as you are currently doing. Then on the main page add a "Page List" block and experiment with its settings so that it shows a list of the sub-pages.
By default it will show the page title and whatever you have in the "Description" property for each page (which you enter when the page is first created, or you can edit on an existing page by going to that page, clicking the "Edit Page" button in the toolbar, and then clicking the "Properties" button in the toolbar -- you will see a "Description" textbox where you can enter this).

Hope that makes sense.
