Sorting out the 'Files' directory

OK I'm no techie but have still managed to work my way around Concrete5 and generally it's been good to me.

But, when uploading images in file manager then replacing editing etc etc my files directory continues to grow. So I may have 5mb of images actually in use but another 35mb of images left in random folders on the hard drive.

I can't find an easy way to sort this/delete all files/folders not used. I could delete all the files and start again but that would be really painful!

I imagine I am being a bit slow and have missed a really obvious button but I'm up to my max on the hosting package now and its driving me nuts.

Any help much appreciated.

so its not so much just hitting delete on a file asset as a whole, its specific versions of a single file you want to remove?

if you go into File Manager > pick a file... > Properties > Versions do you see a delete button next to old versions?

that.. ahem.. /should/ work fine..
