Upgrade to 5.5 Page Attributes not working...among other things

I was perfectly fine with 5.4.2.1 but decided to upgrade to 5.5 in the middle of a project...what was I thinking...we love c5...what could be bad, right?
Well, yes change takes time getting use to and overall it is a nicer version of c5 BUT my custom page attributes are not working. Specifically, I have one set up so that it adds a page to the footer menu. The attribute is there but it doesn't work - the footer nav shows the main nav items.
Any clues as to how to fix this?
