Upgrading to 5.4 from 5.3

So, I attempted upgrading a site that was running 5.3.3.1 directly to 5.4.1. I had major issues and couldn't get the site to function correctly. So I restored back to 5.3. The sitemap currently says "Page Not Found" by the way. But that's the only error I found. I want to upgrade to 5.4, so has anyone had success upgrading from 5.3 to 5.4.0.5, then to 5.4.1?
