$c vs. $_c

I've spent like an hour or looking for the difference between the two but I just can't seem to find an explanation. Is it just that now the $_c version is a protected variable? I'm sorry if this is a silly question, but I'd like to know why. I'm seeing samples of code using both versions interchangeably.
