Calendar Nav feature

I'm pretty much a newbie at Concrete. We are non-profit and I'm looking for a free calendar of events. I downloaded the Calendar Nav add-on, but, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to add an event. I add the Calendar to the page and then add a Calendar list to another page. After that, how to create an event that appears on the calendar? I'd be grateful for any help! The website ishttp://www.elkhartcountyhistory.org/...

Thank you kindly.

Hi maschuld!

To display a page on the calendar:

Add a page to your sitemap.
Change the public date to whatever date you want highlighted on the "Calendar View".
Under "Custom Attributes" drop-down menu select: "Show this item in Calendar Nav".
Save the new file.

Now your calendar view should show highlighted dates and when you click those dates they will take you to the page that you just made.

Hope this helps!

Thank you much! This worked. My next concern is, do I have to create a separate page in the sitemap for every event? My preference would be to have the calendar nav feature take visitors to a page that shows a list of events for that entire month, but when the event is clicked the detailed description registers at the top of the screen. Any idea if the non-free event calendars do this? Or, are there any suggestions for cleaning up the Calendar Nav feature as it is now.

I'm hoping to have co-workers control this, but I don't want them to have to do all the prep work on the generic page before adding an event. For example, it'd be easier if they didn't have to change or delete the header image every time we build a new page. I apologize if I'm not explaining this too clearly. Any help is appreciated.

Hi again maschuld!

You DO have to create a separate page for every event, however you CAN still have the visitors taken to a page that will show a list.

To create the "list" page you have a page above those event pages (news, events… something). On THAT page you would add a "Page List" block and select the pages "beneath this page". You can make that do for featured pages, or just a certain type of page - whatever suits your needs. The page list will show up as a series of links that takes you to that particular event. One thing I did was to put a date list on what I call my "News" page sidebar in addition to putting the page list in the main content area. I also have a date list on the individual posts for enhanced navigation.

As for having your co-workers control the pages.. you can set up a non admin account for "bloggers," or even create a specific type of group that would allow them to complete that function. I haven't added one, but I recall reading about it.

Hope this helps!

Nice add-on. Thanks for making it free.

On a related subject... the attribute "Show this item in Calendar Nav" doesn't show up in my "Custom Attributes" list. Should it be there automatically upon installation of your package or do I have to add that attribute manually? If I have to add it myself, what is the 'handle' and 'name' supposed to be?

SOLVED: Sorry.. I need to read the documentation before I ask dumb questions but your explanation above confused me somewhat when you mentioned...

"Under 'Custom Attributes' drop-down menu select: 'Show this item in Calendar Nav'".

There is actually no such custom attribute in that drop-down box but there is a great big bold checkbox labelled "Show this item in the Calendar Nav" on the page itself that I failed to see because I was busy looking in the 'Custom Attribute' dropdown.
