Centralized Core with v8 Issues

Has anyone had any luck centralizing the core (/concrete) for multiple sites on version 8 (8.1.0 at the time of writing this)?

I'm using Digital Ocean as my host running Ubuntu Linux 16.04.2 on a LAMP stack.

I've followed this old tutorial, but with no luck:https://legacy-documentation.concrete5.org/tutorials/setting-up-and-...

When I visit the site it just gives me this error:
The page isn’t working, it's is currently unable to handle this request.
HTTP ERROR 500

Thanks, however, I'm not sure if that discussion is the same as centralizing the core.

I can't get it to work with v5.7 either, so I'm guessing it's a server setup issue...
