Ecommerce Add On

Hi Folks,

I'm just looking for some feedback from anyone in the UK who has used the ecommerce add on. I've read mixed reviews about the add on being very U.S. orientated and wondered how people have overcome this, if at all. We have two clients who are keen to get an ecomm site up and running asap and I would like to use C5 to develop the sites on and, if the ecomm module is suitable, add this for the shop.

Any feedback or comments would be welcome!

Cheers,

Duncan

I've used the eComm addon, and I can say that it is easily configurable to handle your currency. Not sure why anyone would say it's more geared towards the US. Also, there's plenty of addons for eCommerce that can help even more, and the more recent versions of eCommerce are much more stable than older ones (which is what the comments you saw may have been about).

In short, you shouldn't have any issues with it.

Alternatively, if you need just a light ecommerce solution, check out this addon:

Hope this helps.

Hi GrowthCurve,

Thanks for the lightning fast reply and advice!! That's all very reassuring.

It's certainly a very cost effective solution and I'm definitely NOT worried about the price of it, I just didn't want to go down the road of trying to make it work over here if it's not designed to do so.

Appreciate the comments.

Cheers,

Duncan

The one place that eCommerce is not strong for non-US companies is VAT. Currently, this is a very US-centric implementation that allows a single rate to be set and then a binary off/on selection per product.

With VAT, you can't run multiple rates based on geographic location of the purchaser. For Canada, this makes sales to other provinces more difficult to track and charge the appropriate tax rates for each province and territory. For the UK, you might run into trouble with EC VAT, Reverse Charge VAT and others. Australia would struggle a bit with WET and Luxury Car Tax.

While for many businesses these issues would not be show stoppers, for certain businesses, they could be problematic enough to use a third party cart for this part of the site.

Let me know if you have specific questions regarding Sales tax and VAT and how things might work with Concrete5's eComm and I'll try and help out.

Thanks Brian,

I think that this is always going to be the problem with a 'one size fits all' solution. That an shipping are probably the two biggest bugbears I've found with just about all Open Source solutions. It's a shame and there's definitely a hole in the market for a couple of Add Ons, I just wish I had the skill to write them!!

Many thanks for your advice and your offer. The two clients are fairly small, with small inventories, and I'll need to find out their tax needs first but I think I'll probably go ahead and try the Add On just to see if it's suitable for the UK. If I get stuck I may well ask for your help!!

Cheers,

Duncan
