File Download Error

Hello

It came to my attention today that the download links on my site have been down for over a week. I took a look into it and am not sure what to do.

The download links do not show up on the page until I login to edit the site. When in Edit mode the links work with out any issues. The file downloads and all is well with the world. I tried adding a simple download link by creating a Content block and adding a link to text using the address provided by the file browser. The text appears as a link but when you try and download the file all you get is a screen full of garbled text.

The most frustrating thing is that I made NO changes to the site in this time. When I left it everything was fine and now it is simply not working. I was also greeted with another problem that was not there before today. When I tried to update an application I just get an error message.

Why is it that Concrete5 is breaking when I am not even there?

I am still having this problem and am stuck as to what to do. If anyone has any tips for me I would greatly appreciate it.

Also if it was not to pricey I would be willing to pay to get this sorted out. If anyone is interested please give me a shout.

All the best
Mike

Perhaps you might give the details of the error message.

Thanks for the response. It simply says "invalid file".

Check to see if there are permissions set on the file and who the creator is (available in file properties). I was getting that error and that was the reason. For example, if you log in under your own user name but the file was created by "admin" then you might get this error.

That implies that the file has been deleted from the file manager, or the link that you're accessing it through is wrong. I get exactly that error message if I deliberately delete the file from within the file manager. Have your files been moved without your knowledge I wonder?

You might also want to check whether the operating system permissions are correct - they ought to be 644 or rw-r--r--.

The file is in tact and is in the same place. I have even tried uploading the entire files directory again just to make sure nothing is out of place.

The link shows up and works fine when I am in edit mode as admin but cant even bee seen by any non admin user.

I went to check for the permissions of the file in the File Manager and in 5.5 the only thing I can see is the prompt to add a password. I do not have a password for the file so as far as I can tell it should be available to anyone.

It seems like it is a permissions thing that I just cant find. I am at the seriously frustrated stage with this problem. Do you guys think that I should just hire the Concrete5 team to fix this one?

The permissions I was referring to were in Linux/Apache - you would need your hosting file manager or an ftp client to view them. Although from what you're describing here, (works for admin, not for anyone else) It's probably unlikely.

Is the link available to admin users when the page is not in edit mode, i.e. an admin has just logged in?

Have you got any other addons installed?

If you go to the file manager and open the properties dialogue, it'll show a URL to the file. If you copy that link, log out, and then paste that link into your address bar, what happens?

Passwords on files don't stop the links being visible - it just takes you to a password entry page before you're allowed to download.

You could talk to the C5 team if you want, but I'd guess they're quite busy. I would be happy to look at this issue for you, if you PM me, we can discuss further.

Thank you very much for your time Jero.

I have several other packages installed. File Browser and eCommerce +Digital Download being the biggest.

The link shows up and works when I am logged in as admin but the page is not in edit mode. When I copy the URL found in the File Manager into my browser it prompts me to download the file as it should.

Thanks again!
