Global Area Header Nav not showing in the front office for Guests (visible only for administrators)

Hello C5 Community,

I hope you'll be able to help:
Recently my header auto navigation simply vanished, but what's most amazing, only for unregistered Guests. When I log in to my admin or editor account everything seems to work/look fine. I believe that's permissions issue. It seems appeared for the first time, when I have changed sites permissions for two Global Areas in Dashboard > Full sitemap > Stacks > Header nav / Footer. I allow or in fact I was going to let my Editor group publish any changes made in header or footer without a need of any additional approval. For footer it worked like a charm but unfortunatelly for header didn't. Since then I have no navigation for visitors.

Have you got any clue how to deal with this? I use simple permissions.

Regards,
Peter

WHOA! It's going too fast. Now there's nor header nor footer at the front-end and no listed "Header nav" Global Area at the back-end. What's going on? I didn't change anything except permissions for those two pages in "Full sitemap".

Do you have a link to your site we could have a look at?

Hi mhawke,

The address is http://www.bebello.pl . Many thanks for any help.

Little update:
I've restored site from last good backup. After that everything worked fine. But if I'll make any site permission change (Dashboard > Full sitemap) to Global Areas under Stacks, I come to the point where I've started. I use C5 ver. 5.5.2.1 (update to the most recent version doesn't resolve the issue). Caching is disabled (cache was cleared many times without an effect). Viewed under many different web browsers with cleared/dissabled cache - the site is still not renedering properly. I'm enclosing a screenshot showing how the site is viewed in the back-end.

Why do I have to change permissions?
I have two Global Areas which need to be eddited and published by editor who should not have all administrator priviliges.

Best regards,
Peter

Does the same thing happen if you try to edit every page or just certain pages. Try them all and see if there is one 'page type' in particular that is causing the problem.

OK, I completly have no idea what's happening. Now everything seems to work as usual... Maybe none of this has anything to do with anything but here's what I did:
1. Upgraded my C5 to the most recent version (5.5.2.1 > 5.6.0.2) - quite reasonable I guess.
2. Added a Stack with the same name as missing Global Area, in my casse "Header Nav" - this doesn't make any sense but whatever.
3. Cleared C5 cache few times during the whole process.
4. Viewed Dashboard > Stacks and found 'Header Nav' Stack - no big deal - and... 'Header Nav' Global Area which was missing. Now that's a mystery!
@mhawke, I'll check your advice, if C5 forces me again to do such a stupid 'hacks' as mentioned above. I'll let you know if I have the opportunity to check your solution.
Many many thanks for your help :)

Best regards,
Peter

I haven't really offered much of a solution yet. Just asking questions to narrow things down. I'm wondering if one of your page type files (for e.g. root/themes/your-theme/1-column.php) is at fault. While you were trying to get things going again, did you ever edit the page and change the page type assigned to the page?

When you're in a panic, your brain gets jammed with too many things. Posting your situation on the forum allows others to just see the facts without the emotion you feel while you're desperately trying to fix it.

You'll need to rename 'Header Nav' to 'Mainmenu' or whatever.
Do this in your theme, where it's called as a golbalArea.

Then go to your sitemap and access the systempages. Look for the stacks and rename 'Header Nav' as well to 'Mainmenu' or whatever.

After that you can add your autonav to the stack and it will be visible for guests.

Thank you nickratering. Now everything works fine, but you'll never know... I'll check your advice if c5 surprises me again.

@nickratering... I've been working to correct an issue similar to this one with another website where global areas are visible to the Admin but not to the guests even though all permissions seem to be set properly. Could you explain a bit more about the mechanism behind your solution?
