Unable to add a new page

Hi,
I'm trying to add a new page as I've done so many times in the past, however once I've selected a page type and given it a name and clicked on 'add page' it redirects back to the site home page and when I go back into the sitemap to see if my page has been added, it's not there.
Does anyone know how to fix this? It's quite vital to the running of my client's site.
