Upgrading from PHP 5.2.17 to latest PHP 5.4

To be honest I am just a novice trying to get by. I initially installed 5.4 through my webhost at one and one and came up with a 500 error code. I have the latest concrete 5.6 version so I know it isn't or shouldn't be the core as everything I have found so far says the core shouldn't be the problem. Most if not all of my add-ons and themes are newer or update regularly. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have recently changed a couple of c5.6.3.2 sites from using php5.2 to use php5.4 with no issues.

Take a backup.

Change the 1&1 setting to php5.4

If it doesn't work, change the 1&1 setting back to php5.2. If the php5.4 setting also damages the site, restore from the backup.

I personally do all my devs on a PHP5.4 installation (needed for other projects), so using PHP5.4 on concrete5 should be safe.

As John pointed out, it is always a good idea to have a backup when you do something like that, although I am not sure that you would need it anyway.

I have the same problem (change from PHP5.2 to PHP5.5 causes error message "Internal Server Error"). I've now changed back.
I'm running Concrete 5.6.2.1 on a 1&1 server under their Safe Mode (i.e. they do all updates but haven't yet moved to Concrete 5.6.3.1).
Oddly, there was no problem using a subdomain to access the site (new.djshaw.co.uk instead of justhttp://www.djshaw.co.uk, though they both point to the same folder on my 1&1 filestore.

1&1 say that I can stay on PHP5.2 for a small monthly charge(!)
