What is going on with multi-word search in Concrete5?

Concrete5's built-in search module is wildly insufficient, as it can't find multiple terms. A search for "lorem dolor" fails when the text is "lorem ipsum dolor amet".
Surely this can't be all there is?
Are there any extensions out there (paid or free) that remedy this - but can be run on a shared hosting package?
The "extended search" plugin has been recommended:

but it doesn't say anything about multi-word search so I'm dubious.
There's previous discussions where it is hinted that the behaviour is actually caused by a bug - but surely that can't be, as those discussions are from 2010/11 and if it were a bug, it would be fixed by now. Right? Is it worth trying those patch suggestions - would they still work on the latest 5.6?

I've checked out Franz Maruna's suggestion of integrating Google Search instead - but it comes with a recurring cost if ad-free, and can't be integrated visually 100%.
I'd rather spend some money once and then have a decent, customizable site search.

I can confirm that the core search block looks for expressions as they are and doesn't separate words. It doesn't offer any search tools other than searching for the exact expression.
Concerning the extended search package, it is free so you could probably try it out but I think you are right, it doesn't seem to do more that the core block.
