C5 Installation on A2Hosted account

After having some issues using C5 on GoDaddy's hosting plan and reading several negative posts about C5 installations on GoDaddy, I decided to try A2 Hosted.

Using their auto install of C5 worked without any issues, however it didn't come with any sample content - and I'm fairly new to C5 and like having that content to help give me ideas. So, tried to do a manual install of C5 and this is where I run into problems. One thing to note is that I can install a fresh copy of C5 with content on one of my local servers or on GoDaddy's hositng, then backup the DB, zip the files and move it all over to A2 Hosted and that works fine. It's just a pain to have to do this as I'm testing various things and may need to re-install multiple times.

Here is what I'm seeing. After entering all of the Site/DB info, the install/progress bar makes it to "Adding Block Types" which is about 2 minutes into the install. Then the progress bar turns red and the only option I have is to hit the back button.

At the time the progress bar turns red, there have only been 212 of the 247 tables created. If I leave the browser window open (where I was running the install), over the next several minutes, the remaining tables will eventually show up. Here is a list of the time into the install and the number of tables created...

At 3:00 - 216 Tables
3:30 - 219
4:00 - 224
4:30 - 227
5:00 - 229
5:30 - 231
6:00 - 234
6:30 - 237
7:00 - 240
7:30 - 244
8:00 - 246
8:30 - 247

It seems as though it's not able to write to the DB fast enough or something. The A2 support folks told me how to tweak some PHP settings (memory/timeout, etc.) but none of that helped. I then created a testphp file on each of the hosting accounts (GoDaddy and A2) that output the phpinfo data to compare. If you need that data, you can find it here:

GoDaddy (installs work fine - but I have other issues)

A2 Hosted (fixes the other issues I had, but can't complete the install.)

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi cnd4ua,

I don't have any experience with A2Hosted, but a guess is that you are using one of their shared hosting plans. One of the issues with shared hosting that offers unlimited storage and bandwidth is that server resources are often stretched thin. This can lead to slow page load times and other issues like you are seeing.

If you are looking for an inexpensive fixed plan, I can recommend ExchangeCore. They offer high quality web hosting and most importantly are a host you can trust. The team behind ExchangeCore are long standing members of the concrete5 community and major core code contributors. Their Startup plan is $5 a month, or $50 a year, and offers more than enough storage and bandwidth for most small business and hobbyist sites.

I do not work for ExchangeCore and do not receive compensation for recommending them.
