entire page is a content block
how to change so only certain area is content block?

You could write a little more info about your problem. Difficult to understand what exactly your problem is...

But i still have an idea what you are seeking. Try to click on the content area and chose "Add Layout" from the menu. Here you will be able to add columns to the content area.
