Error 500 after update

As a new admin on our site (sdbs.wa.edu.au) I logged in for the first time and was advised by the site that there was an update to apply. I backed up the database (as suggested) and applied the update, at which point all I get back from the site is Http error 500. Your update appears to have broken the server - how do I fix it now?

I'd be checking php versions.

Server logs may have more info on what caused the 500.

I hope you also backed up the concrete5 files; they're as much a part of the installation as the database.

Do you know which version of concrete5 your site is running?

We've got it back up now. I think it hadn't been updated for a long time, so was using an old release of PHP. It's currently on Concrete 5.6.2.1
