File manager custom sorting attribute

Hi - I would like to make a custom sorting attribute in the file manager in 5.5 and I can't see a simple way of doing this. Ideally I would like to be able to choose a drop down for the 20 or so sets I've done as well as sort from the search columns so I can see which set is which. I'm really missing those tick boxes in 5.4 how can I achieve a similar ease of use for my client??
Click on Advanced Search > Then Customize Results
is there a way of putting a column in the search table proper. I see you can customise this. I've made a text attribute called 'sets' and added it to the columsn. But its not picking up any of my set names that are in the system. I'd like to be able to sort via the sets column as well as having custom searches. Any ideas?
