HTTP Error 500

Hello!
In the midst of loading a block into the page, my website crashed and produced the message "HTTP ERROR 500". I am not sure how to fix this error, for I am new to web development. A friend of mine who is the backbone of the website is currently unavailable to teach me how to fix this error, but I would like some insight from others in order to learn.

What type of block did you add to the page?
Are you able to log into the dashboard of your site? If so, you might try rolling back the page version of the page you added the block to. Page versions are available in the dashboard Full Sitemap page.
