Installing 5.6.3.1 from 5.5.2.1 - From A Mac - FATAL ERROR

Greetings -

I am using C5 v. 5.5.2.1. The application is hosted on Hostgator and I'm on a Mac running the site.

I want to update C5 to v. 5.6.3.1 but I have no server experience at all.

Through my control panel I have access to my file structure on the server.

From my admin login I can download the updated C5 file as prompted.

It seems to automatically download into the appropriate spot on the server and says I should Backup the Site before I proceed (which I did).

When I tried this previously I clicked the Update button and ran through the steps. However the site was hosed and I got a 404 error. Hostgator does not support C5 and I'm not sure what to do.

I want to click the Update button but I'm not sure what, if anything I did wrong. How can I keep an automatic download/update from hosing my site?

Any suggestions are welcome; and remember I don't speak "server" and got no help from my host. Thank you!

UPDATE: I clicked Update and received this error after a couple of minutes:

Fatal error: Call to a member function setAttribute() on a non-object in /home3/ccsm/public_html/updates/concrete5.6.3.1_updater/concrete/core/models/collection.php on line 285

What does this mean, and what do I do??

Hello, updating from 5.5.2.1, you should upgrade to 5.6.0 and then 5.6.3 and then 5.6.3.1 (or 5.6.3.2 which is the newest).

Here is an article that talks about some options for upgrading
