Is it possible to Install a new version 8 theme on my webhost next to an old site using 5.6.3.5 and rebuild/transfer from old to new?

Hello everyone,

So I have an old site that is running 5.6.3.5 on Bluehost using the Slate theme. I feel the need to start over fresh with version 8 with a new theme. I'm thinking of just building a new site from the ground up using version 8 and taking content from my old site piece by piece.

My old site is not that big, only about 9 pages and no eCommerce. Maybe I could set the new theme up along side the old one and just start building pages, blocks, etc. and do a lot of copy and paste, etc.

Is this strategy possible? What is recommended for my situation? Is there a better way? How do I go about doing this? (not even sure where or how to start)

I have limited experience, but was able to get my existing site up many years ago by myself and with the help of the community.

Thanks for anyone giving me their opinion or helping me figure out the right steps to take.
I really appreciate it!

I would set up a subdomain with a fresh install of concrete5 and port the content over manually with copy/paste. You may need new add-ons that work with the newer version. Your theme can be easily ported to v8+ with minor changes if you like.

That sounds like a reasonable approach. I will definitely look into this further.

Thank you for your reply!

I am trying to do this as well. I am working for a client that has a website running 5.6.3.5. I am wanting to rebuild it with 8, while keeping the old site up and running. I was a web designer in my past life, speaking HTML and CSS. I am not used to Concrete5, but I've been fiddling with it and this site for a while so I'm trying to get up to speed!

I have created a subdomain. I have unzipped 8. I have created a new MySQL database. I am unable to get to an Install page. I just get Internal Server Error, with 500 Internal Server Error.

I have read a number of answers on the forums, and watched some YouTube videos, but I can't figure this out. Your help is appreciated!

Oh. Also, we use bluehost, which has caused issues of its own.

Thank you in advance!
