Is mcrypt module necessary?

A client wants to me to install concrete5 with their existing hosting company. The server meets all the requirements EXCEPT they don't have the mcrypt module installed. Is this a dealbreaker? What exactly would a missing mcrypt module due to a concrete5 installation?
