Permissions Damaged after Update to 5.6.1.2

I updated a site from Version 5.5.1.2 to 5.6.0 and then to 5.6.1.2. This went Ok but I now have no access to the permissions. Even as Super User I cannot show the System pages, cannot alter settings or add permissions to anything. If I try to add edit permissions to groups I have no options in the dropdown Select button. (see image attached).
This has crippled the site and I need to know if it is fixable before I try to restore back to the previous version.

OK so still more information on this problem.
As stated earlier I have updated from C5 V5.5.2.1 to C5 v5.6.0
As super user I can access all pages of the site and edit content. People who have previously had page edit permissions as Administrators can now no longer even view the contents of any page on the site little less edit a page.
I have checked permissions and people in the Administrator group have permission to view and edit the pages of the site. They can view the site as a guest but as soon as they sign in they just get a white screen and can go no further.
Can anyone offer a suggestion of where I should look for this problem

Reading previous posts I have now moved from C5v5.6.0 to c5v5.6.0.2 but alas my problem of authorised editors only seeing a white screen when logged in remains.

If no-one is able to help with the specifics of this problem can you at least point me to the table/s in the database that controls permissions. I have a dead site and no idea of how to fix it and a client that just sees white screens when he logs in and wants to make changes to his site.

I rolled back to C5 version 5.5.2.1 and then updated forward to c5 version 5.6.0
My permissions are all OK and the site is working fine.
If I try to update to 5.6.1.2 I get a monumental fail on permissions. Nothing can be edited and no permissions are editable.
Does anyone have any insight on what could be causing this?
