PHP 5.1.6 to PHP 5.5.1 transition with C5.3.3.1 to C5.6.3.1?

Maybe this is the problem I have been having with trying to upgrade extremely old Concrete5 sites from 5.3.3.1 to 5.6.3.1...

Developing locally, I just use my MAMP set up with PHP 5.5.10. Do I need to downgrade my MAMP set up to PHP 5.1.6 when I first clone a Concrete 5.3.3.1 site to my machine?

If so, when do I change MAMP back to PHP 5.5.10 in the upgrading process? I see PHP 5.1.6 is not high enough for Concrete5.6.3.1 so... do I upgrade to the newer version of PHP *before* I upgrade to Concrete5.4.2.2 or after?

Id try the older version (of php) and update til it throws an error. Then switch the php and proceed if possible.
