Running a database backup before or after installing an add on?

Hi folks,
I would like to download an add on on Concrete 5.6 version but not sure if I have to run a database back up before or after I install an add on?
I tried running a backup before installing an add on and the page just went blank. The site works....wondering why it went blank.
