text based dashboard

I've upgraded from an old version (5.3.1) to the latest release (5.4.2) but now when I login the dashboard appears as a text based page with the gui interface.
I've tried the upgrade process a couple of times and it keeps happening.
How do I get the gui back?
The initial upgrade was done in several steps (5.3.1 - 5.3.2 - 5.4.05 5.4.2) and it appears it started after the 5.4 upgrade....
Any ideas?

There's no gui....
