Upgrade from 5.4.4.2 to 5.5/6

I'm currently on 5.4.4.2 and would like to upgrade to the current release. I'm doing this because I need some help with a theme and was told that the version my customer is running is really old and the first thing I should do is upgrade him before anything else. Can I leap directly to the current version from where they at or are other steps recommended? Thank you.

Please can I get some advice here. Does the theme I'm using make a difference? I'm only using OTB widgets and have not bought any. Really the site is pretty much bone stock but I'm afraid of just jumping builds like this.

The download page includes an upgrading note that tells you what steps:

Some other tips:
1. Make a full database and files backup before you start.
2. You can reduce risk by making a clone of the site on a development system and practising the upgrade there.
3. Swap to the default theme before starting, then swap back again once finished.
4. Manually go though your list of installed addons. Check the version numbers against compatibility info on the respective c5 pages.
