Upgrade log-in issue from 4.1 to 4.2

I have a site that was originally built in 5.4.1.1 and am trying to upgrade it to 5.4.2.2 and then eventually 5.5. However whenever I try to upgrade to the first step it does the upgrade. But when I go to login to edit it comes up with this.

mysql error: [1054: Unknown column 'uDefaultLanguage' in 'field list'] in EXECUTE("select uID, uName, uIsActive, uIsValidated, uTimezone, uDefaultLanguage from Users where uName = 'george2556' and uPassword = '922d36c0813ab5ead7e5ba3fc3357e74'")

Any ideas anyone - I urgently need to crack this
