Upgrade to 5.5.1 went wrong

I recently upgraded a site to 5.5.1. The site looks fine, but as soon as I log in, the CSS, theme etc has gone missing -- I just see plain vanilla HTML pages with no styling.

I upgraded another site I manage and everything went fine.

Anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

In answer to my own question:

The problem was with the updates directory which had 700 permissions. Changed that to 755 and all is now working as it should.
