I inherited the job of managing a site that is at 5.3.2

How do I go about upgrading?

You will have a feat doing all the upgrades, but here is what I recommend.

First upgrade to 5.3.3.1 after reading this: http://www.concrete5.org/private/updates/news/updating_to_5_3_3/...

Then go from 5.3.3.1 > 5.4.2.1 > 5.5.2.1 > 5.6.0.2.

Make sure you have all files and database tables backed up prior to each upgrade. When going from 5.4 to 5.5 there are a lot of changes taking place - among others a completely new dashboard and scrapbook is deprecated. 5.6 introduces yet more dashboard changes, new core architecture and a new permissions model.

I suggest you set up a development server with your current 5.3.2 install and go through all the steps (taking notes and saving all backups) before trying it out on your live server. You could also do all updates and fixes on the development server and then do a complete backup and restore to your live server once all is good on the development server.
