Can't edit item in default page

I need to add a character to a piece of text that is (as best I can tell) in the default layout for the "left sidebar" format. I remember adding this as one of the first things I did (several years ago) when I started using Concrete5, but now I can't find a way to change it. I'm attaching an image that shows how far I get:

The first snapshot was taken after selecting Dashboard> Page Types> Left Sidebar> Defaults and then clicking on the "Edit" button.

The second shot is what happens immediately after trying to click on the red letters in the top left corner of the page design. The text includes a hyperlink to the home page, so the page that appears is the first page on the site, not a default page. I can see an outline flash briefly around the "FF&EZ Software" and that is all I can do. In fact, I can't edit any other element on the page, including the footer that appeared by itself in the first shot.

If I back up and go through the regular process of editing a page, I can't access the header text either. Note that there is an unused navigation block at the top that is superimposed on the header text, but somewhat shorter vertically.

I'm wondering if I edited something myself and uploaded it, but I can't remember what I did that long ago. If anyone has any suggestions for this, l will appreciate it. Thanks!
