No option to upload with file manager

Its been a while since I've done a major amount of work on my site and I have just gone to upload a few more images and found that I am unable to do so on file manager - see picture. There is no option up the top to add or upload files. Replacing old files also does not seem to work. I have logged in as both an administrator and editor, both of which groups have permission to add files.
I haven't found anything like this on the forums.
Am using latest version 5.4.2.2
Any advice please?

What do you mean ... "you filled it back in"? How?
I have the same problem, it does not show up in the file manager.
I am not able to update from 5.4.1.1 - it shows I don't need to upgrade.

I received the following reply on another forum and thought I'd pass it on to you.
"Usually this is because the "Allowed File-types" gets "lost", and usually after upgrading from 5.4.2.1 to 5.4.2.2 (well for me anyway).
If the file types box is blank/empty, then no buttons are displayed in the file manager."

I was already questioning if my system is broken.

Note: I my case it was due to the installation of some Addons (mostly gallery and some dashboard stuff, can't really name it in particular because i did not recognize the issue straight away). Just to mention that this problem ist not only caused by updates.

the allowed file access section was made blank through an upgrade, have filled it back in and working fine now
