when switching themes everything is lost.

Hate to use the Joomla word but there you can switch themes (templates) and that is all that changes. Your website is not back to bare bones.

Is it supposed to be that way here?

with regard to concrete5 each page has an ID and those show in your site structure. each page type has a set of named areas. if your first theme has content in an area named by the developer as "Main" but your target theme does NOT have that name, the content will not show.
