5.7 Layout engine limits gird types - any plans for an Area Splitter upgrade?

Hi There,
We're getting our heads around 5.7 but have found that the new Layout engine makes assumes about your grid. As a result, grids that divide the available space and don't care about rows don't work.

There's is sure to get worse when flexbox is fully supported - are there any plans to update Area Splitter for 5.7?
