use for 5.7

Permalink Browser Info Environment
Hi Jordan,

do you have any plans for upgrade to use on v5.7 , if not is there any guide to adapt the block to v5.7 once created in 5.6.

Thanks

Hi Rob,
I will update it at some point, but don't know how soon that will be. I need to wait for documentation on how blocks and the dashboard work in 5.7, which hopefully should be appearing soon now that 5.7 has been officially released. Realistically, though, it will probably be at least a month.

Have you seen this blog post by Remo?

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the links. I have not actually even been able to successfully install 5.7 yet, so I imagine if even I can't get it up and running it's not quite ready for prime time. Also, there are some user interface decisions that are a real step backwards from 5.6 so I am not going to be using 5.7 for new client sites until it is at least as easy to use / intuitive as 5.6 (otherwise, what's the point -- the whole reason I use C5 is because it is intuitive for my non-technical users... I don't care how flashy the new system is if it's hard to use).

So my point is that I do not have a lot of motivation to devote the time to 5.7 upgrades at this point. But slowly over time it will happen for sure! Designer Content is fully open source, MIT licensed, and the code is available on github (https://github.com/jordanlev/c5_designer_content... ), so people are free to upgrade it if they need it sooner.

Sorry I am unable to take care of this right away -- got a lot of stuff going on in my life and work right now, and unfortunately 5.7 upgrades are not #1 on my priority list. But it will happen sooner or later.

Best,
Jordan

yep i know what you mean. :S

add page is backwards and layout block is buggy also confusing to know where the block areas are on the page...

I think they put composer first and incontext editing as an afterthought.

any way! hopefully it gets fixed up when the main man screws his head back on haha.
you know who am on about! :) not you...

Hi Jordon. I think 5.7 is better than 5.6 now that i have used it a few times and i think i have got to the point that i can explain it in a easy way to my clients now.

i actually think composer is better now! compared to edit mode ha! because its easy to just fill in the form and get the page going... i like how I can now force composer or edit mode on page creation depending on the page type and the new way of forcing certain page types to be published below certain pages is nice! i can force my client to take the correct choice every time.

what i would love to do is learn the MVC for concrete5 so i can figure the blocks out. So i can build my own. I always end up wanting to add new fields to existing packages / blocks and don't know how. This is the main reason why i used your designer content add on.

Hi Chris,
Thank you for leaving this feedback. You are the first person I've come across who is having some success with 5.7, and I appreciate the specific details you mention about why you like it. That makes sense to me, and I will give 5.7 another try soon to see if it's up to my needs.

I think in the long-term it is inevitable that everyone will move on to 5.7, so it's just a matter of time for all of the problems to be addressed... once I've started using 5.7 for my own projects then I will be in a good place to update Designer Content to work with it.

Cheers,
Jordan

its hard because people will only start using 5.7 when its as easy to use as 5.6 but developers will only develop for 5.7 when they see that 5.7 has a bigger user base.

Main reason 5.7 is not" easy to use" is it doesn't have the designer content addon. So cant get the users to move over because users need add ons to replace the add ons they had in 5.6 and can't get developers to develop because of the users not moving over.

End of the day the users get persuaded by the web design companies as to what CMS is to be used and if the CMS does not meet the needs of the web designers then they will not choose concrete5.

I think designer content should have been incorporated into the 5.7 core as i have now got to the point that i the web designer feel that i can't be bothered and have turned to another CMS.

The marketplace needs multi site licences with yearly renewals as this is holding it back.
I hope you can see there is a demand for this functionality.

rant over :)

Believe me, nobody is more frustrated with the 5.7 situation than I am. But my reasoning is a little different than what you suggest -- I am not moving to 5.7 yet because it is harder to use for my clients (more confusing, buggy in places, and apparently performance is not so great either). NOT because there is a lack of potential marketplace customers (this version of Designer Content is free anyway so that makes no difference to me).

As soon as the core team addresses the usability and performance issues, I can finally start building my own sites with it... and as soon as that happens I will have the technical understanding and the financial incentive (in terms of billable hours spent, not marketplace sales) to make Designer Content work with 5.7.

It has nothing to do with the user base, so there is no paradox or chicken-and-egg problem here... we just need the core team to tidy up 5.7 so it's at least as good (intuitive and performant) as 5.6 is now.

I have updated Designer Content to run on 5.7.4.1 or greater.

I will send you a message on github to figure out how you would like to import it over. I didnt want to do a pull request that would break your compatibility for the older version.

in the meantime in can be downloaded athttps://github.com/MichaelTaylor3D/c5_designer_content/...

Hi Michael,

I just attempted to install your rewamped DesignerContent for 5.7.4.1, but when I unzipped the folder and the contents into the Packages folder of my new installed 5.7.4.1, I was not able to install anything.
I am running Windows 8.1 and on a localhost.

The message from the backend of my installation says:
This package is damaged. Make sure that it has valid controller.php, and that it was updated for the 5.7 version and above

Spent a few days on it. The biggest thing was getting the new namespacing in place and converting the tools into controllers, since tools were deprecated.

Also some jquery needed to be updated as well. There was an issue with rich text that took a while to figure out because of the new redactor engine.

Wasnt bad, but Id still like to get some people to review the code though if anyone is interested.

I abandoned 5.6 for wordpress because i didn't want any of my new clients on a platform that would stop receiving security updates (eventually) . i looked at 5.7 and was impressed but I fell down the gap between 5.6 and 5.7 because it was quicker to build bespoke in wordpress but designer content being updated will make me want to look at 5.7 again.

Can you post the error that you received after you created that attachment? I duplicated your settings and I was able to create the block successfully.

Make sure that your block name is unique, and if it is and your still getting errors, I suspect it may be a permissions issue since designer_content needs permissions to write to the server.

If it is a permission issue, how do I fix it?

MichaelTaylor3D replied on at Permalink Reply
MichaelTaylor3D
The blocks get written to application/blocks you want read and write access to that directory. However when I tried to duplicate your problem I got a nice red error message that said the blocks directory was not writable. Since I dont see that in your screenshot it may not be permissions after all. But i recommend that you check the permissions for that folder anyhow.

Unfortunately, Im unable to duplicate the problem on my machine, I will need to look through the code and see if its possible to get that error in unintended circumstances to try to get some hints on what might be causing it.

@Chris123uk, have you had an opportunity to install the package yet? Im curious if you are getting the same error.

And accordingly to what I found about this, there should not be any problems, as my Localhost is installed in my C:/drive and outside my "porgramme" folder.

So permissions should not be an issue

I was able to make and create the new Designer Content block and I am able to find it within my blocks and apply it to the page.
So this worked!!!

But a strange thing happened when I clicked the button that says "Make the Block", I was sent back to the localhost home page, in my casehttp://localhost:8080/xampp

Very strange!

But it worked sofar

Thanks, that is a big help, that means that the problem most likely occurs either within the javascript, or the validation controller. In your modified file, I pretty much disabled javascript validation. Its not a permanent fix, because you should really have that validation in there. But with your information, I was able to narrow down the problem to were I can attempt to fix it for real.

Hey Michael,

I'm using 5.7.4.2 and was able to successfully install the designer add on. However, each time I try to add a block, I'm prompted with "Cannot proceed! Please correct the following errors:
* Block Handle is already in use by another package or block type (or block files already exist in the "blocks" directory of your site)."

I've tried changing the names of the block, I changed the permissions of the "applications" and "applications/blocks" folder and also changed my php version to 5.5.26. Any ideas why I may be getting this prompt each time I try to create a block?

I am trying to use this add on with 5.7.4.2 and am getting the same handle name error. I haven't done much troubleshooting yet, but I have discovered a root cause. I will attempt to tear this down and build a fix, but I am rather new to this code so someone else might be able to resolve more quickly.

The problem seems to be related to the sites URL. If I install C5 in a sub folder under the root, for example domain.com/sites/c5-install/my-site, I'm unable to create any blocks and get the error every time.

However, if I install C5 to a sub domain, for example my-site.domain.com, that points to the exact same location of /sites/c5-install/my-site, Designer Content works fine and I can create blocks without issue,

It seems as if the validation is using an incorrect URI, and throws the handle exists error when it can't find and search the blocks location.

I've been able to workaround the issue by using a sub domain, but that is with a new and clean C5 install. I'm not sure if this workaround will be valid if you add a sub domain for an existing install or not.

Like I said, I will try to dev a code fix for this, but it does seem some of you are far more familiar with the code so this might be a simple resolution for one of you.

Cheers,
Matt

Got to say, having installed the modded plugin the other day I can't see much wrong with it. Seemed to work just as in 5.6 - you guys have done well :-)

UI needs a bit of a polish to match 5.7 and the only other thing is it is odd having to manual visit the dashboard url to get to the plugin - but that's more of a C5 5.7 oddity (I think)!

I guess you could say that because c5 has some beautiful features.
But I prefer the orgy I am having with wordpress plugins. Advanced content fields does float my boat!
megant replied on at Permalink Reply

I can say that, because Concrete5 is a well designed, MVC, OOP CMS, in which you can develop custom functionalities easily. On the other hand WordPress is a NoOOP, bloatware s..t under the hood, and it's a joke that it is the most used and known CMS today. Plugins? Are there any kind of basic quality requirements for WP "developers"? I don't think so. Advanced Custom Fields? Last time I must wrote a custom ACF plugin and it was a horrible experience. So you choose. ;)
chris123uk replied on at Permalink Reply
chris123uk
some good points.

end of the day am not a developer building custom code all day. i can build the designs for websites quicker on wordpress as it has the plugins sorted that i need to build out layouts. Time is money and if a platform has this type of functionality already without per site licences then it makes better business sense. I do enjoy using c5 and hope to use it when it makes sense to use it again for my specific needs. btw i have built over 100 sites using c5 and i have only build about around 20 on wordpress and it was hard to learn after c5 but now its quicker and i can meet the needs of my clients better.
jordanlev replied on at Permalink Reply

My company still builds wordpress sites from time to time when our clients demand it for some reason or another. This pretty much sums up my feelings on wordpress... ACF is amazing (without it, wordpress is not a realistic option for non-blog sites), and if you don't want to (or can't) do a lot of custom programming and are okay with the defaults provided, you can find a plugin for pretty much anything. After many years not understanding why Wordpress is so popular I've come to the conclusion that this is the reason for it: designers who don't want to or can't get into php coding can get a LOT of functionality for free. Also it goes to great lengths to maintain backwards compatibility (which is a stance I wish every platform provider would take -- hence the situation I'm in here with not supporting Concrete5.7 yet).

That being said, trying to do custom programming in wordpress is a nightmare (in my opinion).

Anyway, nothing to get in a fight over -- some people like it, some don't. I think it's helpful to discuss benefits and drawbacks, but no need to get offended if someone chooses differently than you would.

PS - Timber (http://upstatement.com/timber/ ) is also great if you're building wordpress sites -- keeps your theme markup cleaner by separating php logic in the template file from markup (via twig templates)

Not sure how closely the Git Repo is being monitored but I thought I'd repost here too as I know people have been working on DC outside of the Github repo.

I've posted what I think is a fix for a reported issue where the Wysiwyg editor was not pulling in existing data when re-editing a block.https://github.com/MichaelTaylor3D/c5_designer_content/issues/3...

I think I've found the root of the issue, but needs someone more knowledgeable to implement the change into the core of the plugin so you don't need to fix each created block.

(BTW for reference - I'm still using the version of DC that was uploaded a few posts back in this thread rather than the Git Version).

I am currently running Concrete version 5.7.5.2

In this minute I am using the version of DC, that megant submitted on Aug 4, 2015 at 7:02 am.
It is working perfect here :-)

Best regards

Posting here, as not sure how actively the Git repo is being worked on.

Using DC on another project on 5.7 and it's still working nicely. One new bug I've potentially uncovered today, is that using the image resizing options leads to very bad image degradation and blurry images on the front end of your block.

I'm guessing something needs looking at with regard to hooking into 5.7's thumbnail generation/image cacheing.

I just download Designer Content, that was posted by megant submitted on Aug 4, 2015 at 7:02 am. It still works in my newest installation with Concrete 5.7.5.8.

Just to let you know :-)
