Is it possible/easy to show the files with a given attribute, rather than files in a given file set?

I have many different categories which I'd like to set up using attributes rather than file sets, to keep the file manager tidy (>50 file sets gets a bit messy!). If I could display by attribute (e.g. show files with the attribute "project1") that would be really useful!
