In 5.7 you can use Stacks, it functions almost exactly the same way, but you manage them from the dashboard.

I had a look now at stacks but they don't seem different than how they were in 5.6, which is: they just allow blocks to be added in and then the whole "group" can be used on any page.

Your add-on was (and still is for 5.6) actually much better than this as it was kind of a "view" of a piece of content from another page. I found it very useful for showing automatically on the first page the latest articles added in few other sections of the site.

Am I missing something?

Stacks in 5.6 and 5.7 are basically identical.

I can port it to 5.7 without too much work but it could be a few weeks (and at that point I may not even remember) until I have time to do that.

Don't worry about it if it's just me asking for it :) It is not a "must" and I can see that you're involved in many other things which are more important for C5.7.
I will try probably to replicate its functionality myself, as my first custom block project.
