on the Create mailing page, there are two links for exporting the list of email addresses.

Dan, no no, it's *not* obvious. It should be on the "Manage Subscribers" page, not the "Create Mailing" page. :)

Perhaps you are right. I was not looking around the 'Create Mailing' page, it is true.
It is also worth noting that only email addresses are exported, not other attributes you may have set up like first and last names. My feeling about the Mailing List Add-on is that it just about covers the basics, but absolutely nothing more.
