I see. This will be your theme trying to override the Mosaic Gallery which is designed to hide the numbers. You can confirm this by applying the default "Plain Yogurt" theme to the page and the numbers will disappear. If you look for a CSS class in your stylesheet which includes "ol" you'll find the numbering in there.
