KML Not Being Read

Permalink Browser Info Environment
Hi:

I imported a KML file as told by the options menu of this plugin, however, even with the right coordinates, it keeps shows latitude 0 and longitude 0. How long will it take Google to correctly place this point?

In any case, is there a way to just input the address of the location rather than the lat/long?

Please help - thanks.

Hi Keith,

Is your site hosted somewhere on the internet, or is it still in development on your computer (localhost)?

This makes a difference because the KML file needs to be read by google before they can return the map data. If your site is hosted locally, requests to and responses from google won't be able to get past all the ports and firewall settings usually in place on personal computers.

It is hosted on a development website.

Even after I Publish the edits and correctly attach the KML file (see attached)

Thanks, Keith. I tried uploading the KML to my test site and it seems to work:

It looks like you've selected a map point in Antarctica-- is that correct?

Hi Matt:

Not sure what you're seeing but this is what I see on my browser attached.

This is also the same type of preview I see on my website.

Is there a plugin that's missing?

Try zooming out. The map point you've specified is in Antarctica, and it seems like Google does not have high-res images of that particular glacier. You can only see if it you zoom out to a wider view.

I've selected another KML that I generated with Google Earth and it seems to render the initial image correctly.

Can you show me an example of your KML fle?

Also, how are you getting coordinates for these KML files?

I'm making these KML files with Google Earth:
http://www.google.com/earth/index.html...

I put a placemark on the map, then choose File > Save > Save Place As and select the KML format. Then I upload the KML to my site and choose it with the Premium Google Map block.

I noticed these files have a lot more code in them than the one you uploaded. I've attached another one I created using Google Earth.

Remember, your site needs to be live on the internet, not localhost, for the block to work.

Matt:

I see it working on Google Earth - however, I can't Save As in KML format -- it won't give me that option.

How can I activate this feature?

I think you have to "fly to" a specific location marker in Google Earth, or add your own (make a new yellow pin on the map) before it'll let you create a KML. Try a famous place like "big ben" or something like that.
