There's a little instruction to get your code by "registering" with ShareThis. There's no "registration" involved at all. You choose your format and "get the button." Then, it spits out 2 kinds of code for you. I added these bits of code to my template and nothing happened whatsoever. Blank space where the buttons should be.
The block works. It's just a regular HTML block except it gets turned off when the page is in edit mode... which was intended to prevent the 'sharethis' menu from being accessible so as to prevent confusion during page editing...
however, I added a HTML block with the sharethis code and it worked fine and when the page was in edit mode I was not able to click on the sharethis buttons (c5 5.4.1 in firefox 3.6)
so maybe this addon isn't necessary anymore?
*I DID have to register with 'sharethis' service before I could get my code. I had to include the html code for the buttons and the javascript code for the functionality. Worked like a charm.
