Counting Daily Visitors

Permalink Browser Info Environment
Hi Tony,
My client is very into watching his traffic & stats and often checks them at least once a day or more.
We have always been under the impression that the visitor count is a daily count of total individual visitors (talking about the smaller number of actual visitors, not the overall page visits that are in the column to the right). In fact I have some recollection of being able to set somewhere the length of time to "reset the visitor count-out time" (ie: tell it to only count an ip address as one visitor per day, even if they came to the site on separate occasions throughout the day -- ie: even if they came (from the same ip address) at 8:15am, 3:22pm, and 9:04pm, they would only count as 1 person in the running daily total of visitors.
Recently my client has been noticing that this isn't true and that if someone comes, closes the browser and then immediately returns it keeps running up the total, making the visitor total incorrectly inflated.
Please let me know asap which file has the code that would allow me to change this to only register each visitor once per day. This is extremely important to my client as he bases all his business decisions on how many active users we have.
Thank you,
Kari

pretty much all traffic tools will treat a new visit as occuring after the user starts a new session. They also tend to have a time out period, so after about 20-30 minutes of inactivity the visit will be treated as finished, and if they then return to the site after that time it will treat it as a new visit. There is a way to increase this setting though if you're willing to look into the source. as I mentioned on the other thread, I'm on vacation and currently on a public computer so can't check the code, but I'll have a dig for where this is in the next few days and get back to you so that you can increase the default timeout. note that even if you do this, it won't automatically reset as a new visit at midnight since it's not designed to work that way.
