Archiving content

I have a client who was asking me if there was way to archive content pages so that they can't be seen by the public.

I told them they could make an "archive" page that only has viewing priviledges for admins. However that just redirects the general public to a log in page but the client doesn't want this. They'd rather the public get redirected to a 404 page or the home page.

Anyone have any good ideas how to archive content in CC5.7 or how to make an htaccess rule which would push the general public to a 404 page when they hit an archived page?

I found the answer to part of my question by installing the "page selector attribute" and "page Redirect" add-ons.
